Personal Safety Tips

Home Security

Secure all outside doors with deadbolt locks.  Outer doors should be solid core wood (1 ¾ inches thick) or metal

Place a metal or wooden rod in the track of sliding glass doors.

Use secure locks on windows.  Hardware is available that will allow windows to be partially opened during warm weather, yet maintain security.

Have good lighting at all entrances

Install a viewer in your door

Make sure you know who is at the door before you open it.  Do not rely on chain locks.  Insist on identification from repair and sales persons.  If in doubt, call their company to verify their identity.

Do not admit persons asking to use your telephone.  Offer to make the call for them.

Know your neighbors, and work out a mutual watch and warning system to prevent burglaries and other break-ins.

Identify your belongings by engraving your driver's license or Department of Motor Vehicle Identification number on your possessions.

Close and lock doors and windows when you leave your home.

If you come home and find a door or window open or signs of forced entry, do not enter.  Call the police for assistance.

Use automatic timers to turn lights on and off to give the appearance you are at home.

Stop mail and other deliveries when you leave for vacation.

Telephone Safety

Do not give information about yourself to strangers over the telephone or admit that you are alone.

Consider listing your name and number in the telephone book without your address.  Also, list only the initial of your first name.

Keep all emergency numbers near the telephone.

Hang up immediately on obscene telephone callers.

Rape Prevention Safety

Rape is a crime of violence.  The motivation is not sexual gratification.  It is power and anger.  The purpose is to control, dominate, humiliate, and degrade.  No one asks to be raped, nor does anyone deserve to be raped. The following is a list of prevention techniques that may reduce the risk of you becoming a victim.

At Home

Lights on at all entrances

Locks on all windows

Covering on windows

Peep-hole in doors

Dead-bolt locks on doors at least 1" deep

Bushes trimmed back, around house.

No name on mailbox.  (Last name or man's name only)

Do not list address in telephone directory (It is not mandatory)

Ask, "Who is it?" when someone knocks at your door

Demand identification from service people making repairs, "before" opening the door.  Call the company and check identification.

On the Street

Look like you have a destination in mind

Keep one hand free when carrying things

Keep a secure grip on your purse

Avoid dark, empty places at night.

Walk around groups of men, not through them.  Turn around if you think you're being followed.  Cross street, run, and yell "FIRE".  If followed, run to the nearest lighted house, store, or police.

Avoid walking alone if you are distracted, upset, or under the influence of any substance which might impair your actions.

Have your door keys ready "before" you get home.

While Driving

Save higher-risk errands like getting gas or going to ATM for daytime

Have your keys ready to use when approaching your car

Travel with a passenger when possible

Avoid the wrong areas.  Know where the high crime areas are

Lock car doors immediately upon entering and keep locked while driving

Don't leave packages, purses, or other valuables in plain sight

Drive in the left or #1 lane if possible

Be extra alert at intersections.  Leave room between your vehicle and the one in front of you to allow you to turn and move without backing up

Don't stop for someone attempting to flag you down.  Drive to nearest phone and call assistance for them

Watch if you are being followed.  If so, drive to nearest police or fire station, not home.

Be cautious when involved in a traffic accident.  Some cars are taken in "bump and robs".

If routinely making bank deposits, use various times and travel routes.

The most important point to remember is remain alert to what's going on around you.

On the Street

Walk confidently.  Be alert.  Notice who passes you and who is behind you.

Walk in well-lighted areas.  Do not walk near buses, alleys, etc.

Wear clothes and shoes that give you freedom of movement.

Do not overburden yourself with bags or packages that might make running difficult.

Carry as little cash as possible.  Carry a whistle or Freon horn.

Hold your purse tightly, close to your body.  Keep your wallet in a front buttoned hip pocket or inside coat pocket.

Do not hitchhike

If a car stops you for directions or information, always reply from a safe distance.  Never get too close to the car.

If a vehicle's occupants persist in bothering you, cross the street and walk or run in the opposite direction.

If you feel someone is following you, turn around and check.  Proceed to the nearest lighted house or place of business.

If you feel you are in danger, do not be afraid to scream and run.
